The shoreline east of Port Antonio boasts 300 kilometres of interconnected coral reefs at an average of 100m to 300m from shore. In 2016 the Alligator Head Foundation facilitated the creation of the East Portland Special Fishery Conservation Area, an area where fishing is no longer allowed and the focus is on conservation, including for the assistance of the native Turtle population. The remarkable success of this venture makes Portland a fascinating destination for those wishing to see conservation in action. In addition the creation of the Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park as a UNESCO World Heritage Site ( see https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/1356/ ) demonstrates the increasing awareness of the value of our natural environment and the need to actively conserve it.
The Alligator Head Foundation ( https://alligatorheadfoundation.org/ )and Blue Lagoon both offer an array of above and underwater sporting and arrangements can be made through our receptionist or by calling 876-993-7406 / 876-993-7270.
Boston Beach is 20 minutes east of Port Antonio and located near the famous Boston Jerk Centre. It is highly popular with surfers and bodysurfers as tides are often high. Most of the beach has been washed away, so surfing is your best bet! Boards can be rented at the beach. If you still have energy after a day of surfing, head over to Boston Bay for African Drumming & Dance every Saturday from 7 pm – 9 pm.
